new 2018 North Carolina Open Class B Champion. Fuquay was in a 2-way

this title. Players were welcomed to Comfort Inn Archdale by a nice front desk counter display
sign announcing: Welcome!! 128th NC State Open Checker Tournament
"IM Tim Laverty Tournament Honoree"
Playing in Conference Room. Teal Stanley, NCCA President, opened our 128th Annual North Carolina State & ACF District 4 checker tournament by welcoming
16 players, from 6 States: 7 from NC; 3 from VA; 1 each from MS; IN; SC; and
FL and 2 players from Kiev, Ukraine.
Teal lead us in our tournament invocation before opening our annual North Carolina Checker Association (NCCA) business meeting and turning announcements and tournament details
over to JR Smith, NCCA Secretary.
The Business Meeting was called
to order at
8:30am Friday, May 18th in the Comfort Inn - Archdale Hotel conference room.
Members in attendance: 5 NCCA Life-Time members were present: John
Webster, Jeff Webster, Teal Stanley, Tim Laverty, and JR Smith all from North Carolina. We had
3 other NCCA members: Glenn Fuquay, Morris Auman and Patrick Dallas all from NC. There were
8 other out of state players: Michael Holmes-MS,
Alex Holmes-IN, Matthew Clark-SC, Richard Marlowe-VA, Ryan Pronk-VA,
and Buck
Smith-VA making a total of 16 tournament players present. JR Smith did not participate
in the tournament because of back pain. We also had a NC guest member,
Richard Brown and his grandson Caylx Ayres from Pinebluff, NC neither
participate, but seem to enjoy seeing old checker friends. We especially appreciate and welcome Michael Holmes from
Carriere, MS who drove into Archdale, NC for a 750 mile trip / 12 hours on the road, our most
distant players. Also making long travels to the tournament were Alex Holmes,
who drove in from Clarksville, IN 490 miles / 8.5 hours and Michael O'Hara
drove in from Inverness, FL 590 miles / 10 hours. Secretary Smith read last year's minutes which
were preprinted and available to members. Smith reviewed the
2017 minutes which were approved as
read & presented. Announcements: JR Smith spoke about this year's tournament being
in honor of IM Tim Laverty who is our “Tournament Honoree” who was on our display sign as
“Honoring IM Tim Laverty for his
life-time of dedication and pursuit of Checker Excellence.” Tim was presented a nice “Tournament Honoree” plaque. Also announced were two recently deceased checker players, Harvey Kelley, and
George Cox. Their obituaries were posted on the playing room wall. Other
announcements and reporting were available and displayed on the playroom
wall:
Tournament Schedule, Playing Rules, & Contributors, NC State Champions, List of Restaurants,
Financial Report - yearly history of the fund accounts,
and NCCA's total accumulated prize fund withdrawn
for anyone who wanted a copy. Smith also reported that our 2017 Federal Tax Return (990)
was filed 1/01/2018, and our NCCA Trust Fund account as of 5/13/2018 statements:
has a market value of $12,516.85 for our Edward Jones (EJ) account + RBC Wealth
Management account has a market value of $13,607.85 for a total of
$26,124.70 before this year's prize fund withdrawal. These amounts
maybe verified by statements or on-line by any officer who has account ID
and password. Election of officers: We voted to keep the current officers
another year. Teal-president, Jeff-vice-president, JR-secretary, and
Mike-treasurer. We discussed under topic New Business to play a
Master division
round robin of 8 players and a B Class division round robin of 8 players.
We set the entry fee as $30 for Masters and $20 for B Class Majors, and any NCCA Life-Time member is exempt of a State Tournament entry
fee. Motion made and carried by majority vote on the discussion about Tournament
format. We kept our standard round time as 2.5 hours or (1.25
hours per game) and the number of rounds as 7; therefore, playing 4
rounds Friday and 3 rounds Saturday. Play starts both days at 9:00 AM
as posted in Tournament
Schedule on the playing room wall.
The top North Carolina player in the A Class will be
recognized as the 2018 NC State Open Checker Champion and the highest
finishing NC player in the B Class will be recognized as our
2018 NC State Open Majors Champion. Only a NC residence may be a NC Championship
title holder. The 2018 District 4 Champion will be the highest finishing player from District 4.
Rules
ACF Titles that precede player's name stand for:
GM stands for Grandmaster, MS stands for Master,
EX stands for Expert,
are earned titles given by The American Checker Federation to distinguish a player's
knowledge and skill. For information on ACF Titles, please see
Bylaw XII - ACF Titles. We love our new ACF Rating System and appreciate
our programming software engineer & rating processor, Clint 0lsen from Kitchener, ON N2A0 OC1OC1 (Canada) who took on the
job of design, creation, and
maintenance of this excellent & professional system. Our Tournament Ratings data was
pulled from this
Rating System.
Clint also serves as our ACF website administrator. When you are viewing the above cross-tables the "T" separates player's opponent from player's
earned game points for that round as: Draw is 1, Win is 2 points, Bye is 3, and Forfeit is 4.
A forward slash "/ " separates earned game points from accumulated
(total) game points. (F)
indicates a Forfeit and (wd) designates a Withdrawal. Time clocks, game recorder sheets, and extra pens were available on the
back table for those players who wanted them. All players were emailed a tournament flyer and or mailed a postcard invitation
two months prior to the tournament, and of course all known checker players
with an email address got a group email about the tournament with a link to
the NCCA's checker calendar.
Smith also announced, next year's 129th Annual 2019 North Carolina Open Checker Tournament
to be held on Friday and Saturday, May 17th & 18th 2019. This is in keeping with the State
Tournament dates as in the past, to be held the first weekend after Mother's Day which is the second Sunday in May.
We will use Comfort Inn - Archdale again as our tournament venue location. Other Announcements: The next three checker
tournaments will be Texas Open & District 8,
New England & District 1,
and the Southern Open, of course you want to book your flight & room to our National in
Las Vegas at least 90 day before September 17-20, 2018. Adjournment: Our meeting adjourned at 8:58
AM and a copy of
the Financial Report, Annual Report, and Minutes are available to members
on-line. We started our 2018 NC State Open Tournament at 9:00 AM in the same
conference room. We will have local newspaper coverage with
pictures next year since we are holding our tournament in a small town and
they like local news with a folksy touch. We appreciated the donations and contributions,
which are added to the entry fees and with our fund account withdrawal, making a
total $2,300.00 tournament prize fund. Again this year, Joe McDaniel graciously supported us with
$300.00. NCCA Life-Time Members are exempt of any State Tournament entry fees,
one of the huge benefits of being a life-time member. We welcome and appreciate
Glenn Fuquay becoming a Life-Time Member 5/18/2018 at our 2018 NC State Open in Archdale,
NC. We appreciate Tim Laverty and Gayle Smith serving as
our tournament director, referee, and score-keeper. All players who wanted a list of the 2018 NC State Open and District 4
players' addresses & emails were available from the tournament director. Our oldest player was Buck Smith, age 87 with a birthday on March 16th,
and our youngest player was Alex Holmes
age 19 with a February 28th birthday. We appreciate Gayle Smith who brought a large
packed ice chest so we had plenty of water,
fruit salad, salsa/cheese dip, chips, dips, veggie trays, dessert salads,
cheese & crackers, etc. available throughout the tournament. A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all who attended.
